SEARCH the CATALOG by Call Numbers or Other Numbers
LC Call Numbers
Local Call Numbers
ISBN, ISSN, LCCN
Government Document NumbersMost materials in the Law Library have call numbers based on the system developed by the Library of Congress (LC). Typing in an exact call number will retrieve the item that has that call number. Typing in the first part of a call number will retrieve a browse list of material with nearby call numbers regardless of library location. For example, if you enter
kf3365
you will find labor law materials that might be in several locations: Reference Stacks, Reserve, Classified Stacks, and so on.
Tip: it does not matter if you put a space between the letters and the numbers:
kf 3365
will retrieve the same list as
kf3365
Tip: when you are looking at a catalog record, you can click on the call number to be linked to a list of materials with similar call numbers.

Some material in the Law Library does not have a Library of Congress call number.
Many (but not all) periodicals are shelved by title (typically, the current year is on Reserve and older volumes are on the seventh floor). So, for instance, the "call number" for the Michigan Law Review is "SHELVED BY TITLE." To see a list of everything that is shelved by title (whether it is on Reserve, in microfilm cabinets, in Periodicals Floor 7, or wherever), search for "shelved by title" as a local call number.
Material that has not yet been fully cataloged is designated "in process." You can also search "in process" as a local call number.
This feature allows you to search by International Standard Book Number (ISBN), International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), or Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN).
Materials distributed to libraries by the Government Printing Office are assigned numbers in the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) system.
The Law Library assigns Library of Congress call numbers to almost all of its government documents and shelves them according to their LC numbers. The exception is congressional hearings, which are filed in microfiche cabinets according to their SuDoc numbers. (Many libraries shelve all government documents according to their SuDoc numbers.)
You can search by SuDoc number. For example, if you search for
Y3.Eq 2:1
you will find the Annual Report of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and find that in this library it has the LC call number HD4903.5.U58 A32. If you search for just the first part of the SuDoc number, Y3.Eq, you will find other material from the same agency.
Tip: Not all catalog records of government documents include SuDoc numbers. If a SuDoc search is unsuccessful, try author, keywords, or title searches
