Library of Congress Subject Heading Search

Finds: Records with specific subject terms established by the Library of Congress.
Type: All or just the beginning of a Library of Congress Subject Heading.
Search tips:

To determine the appropriate subject term, you can:

  • Perform a keywords search; look at the terms under LC SUBJECT in the resulting citations; perform a new search using these subject headings.
  • Consult printed editions of the Library of Congress Subject Headings available in the Law Library near the Reference Office.

Many subject heading subdivisions can be "rotated," i.e., any ONE subdivision except those starting with numbers can be moved to the front of the initial subject search term with the same results.

Example:
Civil procedure -- Washington (State) -- Forms
can be searched as:
forms civil procedure washington state
or:
washington state civil procedure forms
but NOT:
washington state forms civil procedure
Frequently-used subdivisions which do not rotate are: bibliography; biography; history, outlines, syllabi, etc.; law and legislation; laws and regulation; laws statutes etc; legal status laws etc; periodicals; united states.
